In December 2023, China and Nicaragua have issued a joint statement on the establishment of a strategic partnership between themselves, embarking on a new starting point for the cooperation between both sides. With the announcement of this joint statement, China and Nicaragua are expected to further deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen friendship, which will inject impetus into the building of a China-Latin America community with a shared future.

In the statement, both parties highly value the recently signed Free Trade Agreement, anticipating its enactment. Both parties would take the opportunity to continuously upgrade the scale and level of bilateral trade. China encourages well-established Chinese enterprises to invest in Nicaragua, especially in infrastructure projects, and explore various investment and financing initiatives proposed by Nicaragua. Nicaragua expresses the willingness to further promote its business environment, ensuring policy support and convenience for Chinese investors.

Nicaragua has participated in the Belt and Road Initiative and has been vocal about its support to China-proposed Global Development Initiative. Nowadays, China is Nicaragua’s second-largest trading partner and second-largest source of imports. The establishment of strategic partnership between China and Nicaragua is believed to further solidify mutual support on core interests and major concerns for both sides.
