China and South Africa Jointly Launch Cooperation Supporting Modernization in Africa

China and South Africa launched the Initiative on Cooperation Supporting Modernization in Africa (the “Initiative”) on November 22, 2025, during the Johannesburg Summit of the Group of Twenty (G20). Jointly drafted by China and African partners, the Initiative aims to support Africa's modernization and encourage the international community to increase attention and investment in Africa.
The Initiative focuses on enhancing economic development, promoting social inclusion, and ensuring sustainable growth through increased international cooperation. Key areas of collaboration include advancing green infrastructure, boosting technological innovation, improving healthcare, and strengthening Africa's role in global governance. The Initiative also calls on the international community to accelerate the reform of the international financial system, increase technical assistance to African countries, strengthen international cooperation on green infrastructure and green minerals, safeguard Africa’s food and medical security, and support African countries in achieving the “six modernizations”: justice and equitability, openness and win-win, putting the people first, diversity and inclusiveness, sustainable development, and underpinned by peace and security.
The Initiative is a bold step towards securing a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa, serving as a testament to the power of international cooperation and the shared commitment to building a more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful world.
