The article reported on the penalties imposed on a number of online brokerages for providing unlicensed securities trading services to mainland residents. It also considered the wider implications of the regulatory tightening for offshore trading, capital outflows, Hong Kong’s stock market and professional service providers involved in cross-border financial activities.

Gordon commented on the compliance implications for Chinese internet brokerage companies operating across multiple regions.
